Know the Law: Cannabis in Connecticut

  • Adults 21 and over can legally possess up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis in public and up to 5 ounces at home (if stored securely).

  • Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal. Using cannabis in a moving vehicle is also against the law—for both drivers and passengers.

  • Adults may transport cannabis only if it’s stored in a locked glovebox or trunk.

  • Home growing is allowed for adults and medical marijuana patients: up to 3 mature and 3 immature plants per person, with a maximum of 12 plants per household.

  • Taking cannabis across state lines is illegal, even if both states have legalized it.

  • It is illegal to give cannabis to anyone under 21. Connecticut’s social host law includes cannabis, so adults may face consequences for allowing underage use on their property.

  • Employers may still restrict cannabis use, even outside of work hours.

  • Cannabis cannot be smoked or vaped anywhere tobacco use is banned. Local towns may set additional rules for public use.

  • Use is not allowed in state parks, beaches, or on state waters, and landlords may prohibit smoking or vaping in rental housing.
